Understanding by Design (UbD) is a framework for curriculum development that reflects the principles of of backwards planning. The UbD framework was developed by Jay McTighe and Grant Wiggins.
Over the past several years AES has provided extensive instruction around the framework and practicality of developing units with UbD. We embrace UbD in our school because it supports an inquiry-based curriculum through the use of “Enduring Understandings” and “Essential Questions”. This framework that leads to deeper understanding of curricular goals for our students. We support the development of curriculum by providing instructional coaches throughout the school to assist teachers in the unit development process.
On this page you can find many resources related to planning with UbD, and professional development presentations about UbD.
